Middle School Competitions
The Canadian Fluid Power Challenge is intended to provide Grade 7 and 8 students with hands-on experience building a hydraulically actuated mechanism with real-world applicability and to open their eyes and teachers' eyes to technology careers and, in particular, careers in fluid power. The Challenge is an excellent complement to the science and technology curriculum at these grade levels. At a minimum, the organizers hope the Challenge will encourage students to select more mathematics and science courses in their high school programs to keep their options open for technology-based post-secondary studies.
Â
The CFPAâs first Fluid Power Challenge took place in Toronto in 2001, where it continues to be held annually in cooperation with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). These Local Challenge events involve multiple schools, each represented by teams of four students, coming together at a central venue. Similar events have been held, based on local demand, in Edmonton, Winnipeg and London. The 2024 edition of the Toronto Challenge is being held at Centennial College in Scarborough, Ontario.Â
